About me
Safespace Counselling Durham

My name is Sarah and I am the Counsellor at Safespace Counselling Durham. I work with children, young people and adults. My office is based at Doxford park however, I also offer online, telephone and walk and talk therapy if you feel conventional counselling is not for you.

session information

The work I do is intergrative meaning that I use a range of methods and techniques to help you with your presenting issues. However, when accessing counselling the work we do is lead by you and at a pace that suits your needs, as no one knows you better than yourself. Counselling can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience allowing you to understand your behaviours and find solutions to your issues through challenging your thoughts and behaviours, learning and practicing coping methods and building emotional resilience.

In sessions with children, I often use creative aids to help in the work we do, such as painting, using stones, Lego building or playing games. This helps when processing information and can give visual representation to the emotions we are feeling. I also use some of these methods with adults if they feel this is something they would like to do.

All sessions are based in a mutually agreed safe space, and everything shared in session is kept between yourself and I, within the bounds of confidentiality and its limitations.

Accessing counselling for yourself or your child can be a daunting process and I want to make your experience as smooth and beneficial as possible. So, if you have any questions around counselling or the services I offer please visit safespacedurham.co.uk which offers information on the services I provide, or contact me via email or telephone.

Introduction:
When we go through life, our opinions alter and so do our thoughts on past and present experiences. Things we have been through previously can suddenly hit us like a ton of bricks and we don’t know where the thoughts came from. We can be watching tv, reading a book and all of a sudden, Anxiety we never had before rears its ugly head affecting us in ways we never thought of, disturbing our daily lives whether gradually or suddenly. We could be sitting in a cafe with friends, completing tasks at school/work and all of a sudden a huge wave of grief takes over us. I am here to help you explore these feelings learning ways to cope.

Despite the good news about vaccines the emergence of a new more infectious strain of the virus is very worrying. With the new countrywide restrictions it is still in theory possible to see people face to face for counselling if this is assessed as essential to prevent risk of serious harm, but unless this can be justified I think it’s not advisable for now. I can offer Zoom, Skype or telephone sessions for now with hopefully the possibility of face to face meetings in the future.

It has been interesting using Zoom,Skype etc and more telephone sessions, it seems that it helps to ask what works best for each person, eg some people prefer the telephone as offers more “distance” and can feel safer to discuss very painful issues.

Introduction:
During these very uncertain times , having a safe space to explore your struggles is more important than ever, I am able to provide a safe, warm and caring space in which to allow you to explore whatever you want to bring to therapy. If you are currently experiencing anxiety, depression and concerns about your situation, you are not alone.

I am able to offer my experience working online with clients to help you work through your struggles.

In today’s busy world life can sometimes feel overwhelming, leaving us struggling to manage emotions that often feel like they’ve come from nowhere. Experiencing feelings of anxiety, depression, sadness, panic attacks, anger and work-related stress or suffering from a constant low mood, can often lead us to feeling bewildered and alone.

In my experience many people can feel anxious discussing their struggles, so as an experienced qualified counsellor, I aim to provide a safe, warm and caring space in which together we can explore effective ways to enable you to feel positive, empowered and better able to move forward with your life.

Initial contact can be by email or telephone, whichever you feel most comfortable with.

My 2 1/2 years counselling at Mind and 2 years working as a psychotherapist in a private drug and alcohol rehabilitation clinic , have given me the opportunity to work with a vast and extensive number of issues and I have gained a huge and varied amount of experience.

I am trained in an Integrative approach, this allows me to meet the needs of clients using the most appropriate and flexible manner and brings together different elements of specific therapies.

Even though clients may present with similar issues, I believe we are all individuals and as such our journey in therapy will be most beneficial if it specifically meets our individual needs.

You may be considering therapy due to experiencing any number of things, whether you are experiencing generalised anxiety disorder, phobias, separation and divorce or suffering from the effects of trauma or PTSD , to just feeling that you’re stuck and unable to move forward in life. It’s not unusual to find ourselves feeling that we could get more out of life “if only”, and here the list is endless: “If only I “was more confident, could challenge my boss, give up smoking, end this unhappy relationship, lose weight, stop drinking/ using drugs, relying on others to speak for me, cope with my anxiety, etc.

There really is no issue that can’t be brought to therapy and explored, working through a problem at your own pace and learning new ways to approach life can be liberating and life-changing.

For further information or to book an initial consultation please contact me. Respect and confidentiality are assured at all times.

Introduction:
I have been qualified as a counsellor since 2000; I specialize in anxiety, panic, shame, depression and trauma.

We will meet in my comfortable counselling room in my private practice in Loughborough. This is a safe place for reflection and exploration; I have created a place for you to feel confident to work in confidentiality. I will be non judgmental, offer support and guidance, provide knowledge and psycho education and info graphics.

We have to free ourselves to be ourselves. Living an authentic life and being our authentic self.

I work with Abuse and Trauma; childhood, sexual and violence. I can provide strategies to cope and heal what you have suffered. The effects of trauma can be life long and debilitating. Often drugs, self harm, alcohol are used to ease the pain and suffering. I suggest you may not go back to how you were before the trauma, but when you can manage your reactions, you can do anything you want to.

It may be hard to make the first move for therapy, but you have looked at my profile and the next step is easy; you have already achieved a goal. Have a look at my website for details and more information about the issues I can work with.

I am a graduate in Human Communication and have completed a Counselling Certificate and Diploma.

I offer specialist knowledge in Fertility, Post Natal Depression and Hypnobirthing.

I have studied shame and how it effects humans, and how it affects trauma survivors. It is something we do not want to talk about because it hurts. Guilt also comes up and the two can be confused. Guilt tells us we have done something wrong which we can correct, however shame tells us we are a wrong person which we cannot correct.

I work with shame and have strategies to survive it.
